Origin
The studio, not the stone.
Obsidian Media Services was founded in Dubai by photographer and computer hardware engineer Afra Afrasiabi, the structural brand around a decade of work that has run, deliberately, between two disciplines: the engineering of systems and the composition of images.
Obsidian is the holding studio for that range of work (media production, marketing consultancy, equipment trading, and software and hardware advisory for media-oriented operations), built on the conviction that the difference between competent media and considered media is technical literacy applied with restraint.
"We do not produce media that competes on volume. We produce media that competes on edge."
Operating principle
Why Obsidian
A material with memory.
Obsidian is volcanic glass. It is formed under extreme pressure, cools fast enough to never crystallise, and breaks along edges measured, under laboratory conditions, to be sharper than surgical steel.
Polished, it returns a complete reflection of whatever stands in front of it. Sectioned, it reveals every layer of the pressure that produced it. The name is the brief: pressure produces clarity, sharpness is built in, and what we deliver is expected to reflect the ambition placed before it.
To set the standard for considered media work in the region, where precision, restraint, and technical fluency replace volume, noise, and convention.
To produce and advise on media projects with the discipline of a hardware studio and the eye of a fine-art photographer, across production, strategy, equipment, and systems.
Operating values
Five, held without exception.
Precision over volume.
One frame done correctly outranks ten that are nearly right. We measure work by the version we wouldn't change, not the number we produced.
Substance over surface.
A polished surface is the consequence of dense, careful work, never a substitute for it. Style without structure does not survive scrutiny.
Technical literacy.
We earn the right to advise on systems by understanding them at the implementation level. We recommend what we have used, configured, or built.
Discretion.
We are selective about whom we work with and quiet about how. The work speaks for itself; we do not need to.
Edge.
Comfortable work is rarely memorable. When a brief allows two paths, we take the angle that risks more and explain why.
